MORRISBURG – Seven years is more than a lifetime for the children who benefit from the programming and services offered through Ontario Early Years Centres which focus on a child’s first six years of life.

For seven years the local Ontario Early Years Centre has been located at the former Spinning Wheel Restaurant location in Morrisburg, but last week a small celebration was held to recognize the time  that thousands of children have spent at the centre.

WILLIAMSBURG – People being extra cautious with their money in difficult economic times could have an impact on utility companies like Rideau St. Lawrence, but this summer’s hot weather has reduced the potential effect of conservation measures.

John Allison, director for South Dundas on the RSL board last week provided South Dundas with an update on the utility company, in which the municipality is a shareholder.

“Sales and income from all operations have been stable,” Allison told council.

WILLIAMSBURG – Boat launch fees will be waived for 40 of the top bass fishermen participating in the Renegade Bass Tournament, which is hosting the Renegade Classic here in Morrisburg September 11 and 12.

South Dundas Chamber of Commerce president Brian Cox asked South Dundas council at the Aug. 17 meeting to consider waiving the fees for the tournament participants during the upcoming event and for any days leading up to the event that they come here to practice.

“We believe that the economic benefit is sufficient to waive the fees,” said Cox.

WILLIAMSBURG – Five submissions have been received for project management services for construction of a new $18 million waste water treatment plant, but the selection of one company to provide the services has been delayed.

South Dundas chief administrative officer Stephen McDonald provided a report to South Dundas council at the August 17 meeting recommending that the Ontario Clean Water Agency be retained to provide the service, but South Dundas mayor Robert Gillard asked that any decision on the report be deferred until a full council was in attendance.

IROQUOIS – Ten years ago, she wrote A Violent End, the first in a series of mysteries tied to the St. Lawrence Seaway project featuring amateur sleuth  Farran Mackenzie.

The Brother of Sleep and All Mortall Things followed.

Several local fans took the opportunity, Saturday, August 21, to meet author Maggie Wheeler at a book signing for her latest mystery, On A Darkling Plain, which was held at the historic Carman House in Iroquois.
