SOUTH DUNDAS – Time is winding down to the 2010 municipal election deadline of September 10, and still the list of candidates continues to grow.

Late Tuesday morning Shirley Belanger of Iroquois filed nomination papers announcing her intention to seek election as South Dundas councillor.

The Leader will speak with Belanger about her candidacy in an upcoming issue.

As of press time seeking one of the three municipal councillor positions here in South Dundas are; Shirley Belanger, Archie Mellan, Paul Robertson, Bill Ewing, Evonne Delegarde and Jim Graham.

WILLIAMSBURG – In his 30 year political career, South Dundas mayor Robert ‘Rowdy’ Gillard has now served in every position of municipal government, from councillor to deputy mayor to mayor. As he prepares to head into this year’s election, Gillard is sure that the position of deputy mayor is the best fit for him.

August 13, Gillard filed his nomination papers declaring his intention to seek election as deputy mayor for South Dundas in the upcoming municipal election.

MORRISBURG – Although taking passengers aboard the newly dedicated miniature train ‘The Moccasin” had to be delayed, the celebrations were not.

The St. Lawrence Park Commission had planned to offer free train rides to the community as part of the celebrations, however they did not receive an engineering stamp of approval in time to allow the train to carry passengers. Although there was some disappointment, everyone who attended was give a voucher for a free train ride when the train does start taking passengers, September 1.

IROQUOIS – The highly acclaimed novelist, Maggie Wheeler, will be appearing at the Carman House Museum, Iroquois, on Saturday, August 21, from 1-3 p.m.

Wheeler is currently launching the fourth, and final novel in her Farran Mackenzie mystery series, On A Darkling Plain.

She will be in Iroquois Saturday afternoon to sign personal copies of her novel.

SOUTH DUNDAS – To the municipal electors of the Township of South Dundas, take note that voting for the election of Municipal Councils and School Board Trustees will be held on October 25, 2010.

Persons interested in submitting their names as candidates may now complete the necessary nomination forms and submit them to the Township Office by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2010.

MORRISBURG –  The OWHA has approved the South Dundas Girls Hockey Association’s request for a name change.

Girls playing out of the Morrisburg and Chesterville arenas will now be known as the Dundas County Girls Hockey Association announced League president, Ron Haas. The name change is the result of a request by the league executive following a vote by all players.

MORRISBURG – David Hingsburger, author, blogger and internationally known expert on the rights of people with developmental disabilities, will be in Morrisburg four days next month sharing his knowledge and expertise.

Community Living Dundas County will welcome Hingsburger September 22-25, to present workshops to anyone who is interested in participating. That will include CLDC staff, families and supporters of people with intellectual disabilities and self advocates.

SOUTH DUNDAS – Friday the 13th was a lucky day for the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Close to Home fund raising campaign because it was Business Blitz day.

Through their annual business blitz, funds are raised, oftentimes in very creative ways by businesses across the hospital’s large catchment area.

Here in South Dundas businesses supported the effort in force, some in very creative ways.

MORRISBURG – The new miniature train and phase one of the newly laid track at Upper Canada Village will be officially named and opened for rides this Friday, August 13 and in celebration of the opening, train rides, parking and admission to the Village will be free to all guests starting at 1:30 p.m.

The first element of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission’s $13 million Discovery Centre project, the train and new track will be officially launched by Tourism & Culture Minister Michael Chan at 2:30 p.m. this Friday.

MORRISBURG–The St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) has announced the awarding of the contract for general contractor for the construction of the Upper Canada Discovery Centre to the Cornwall firm of Robert J. Bourgon & Associates Ltd.

The construction contract, valued at $3.1 Million was awarded through an open and competitive purchasing process, conducted by MHPM Project Management, who is overseeing the overall project.
