MORRISBURG – With Old Home Week, the celebration of Morrisburg’s 150th anniversary, behind us, organizers are now measuring the event’s successes.

Counted among them is the four days that the tour boat, Sea Fox II, operated from the Morrisburg dock. Captain Andy Neeteson admitted that initially he was not sure that they would be able to fill the tours offered, but reflecting on the busy and successful week, he was pleasantly surprised.

MORRISBURG – With all the festivities surrounding Old Home Week, the true purpose of the celebration was not lost.

The purpose of Old Home week was to celebrate Morrisburg’s 150th anniversary, and the history of Morrisburg display set up for four days at the Morrisburg Public School, was among the most well attended events of the celebration.

An estimated 700 guests enjoyed the free display, which was organized by Jack Barkley.

Although Barkley made the arrangements for the event to happen, he credits the presenters with much of the event’s success.

MORRISBURG – The humans gathered at the Morrisburg beach might have been a little nervous on Sunday, August 1, but the four-footed stars of the first ever Park Pals Duck Race definitely weren’t.

Abby, Bumper and Coco leaped into the water like old pros, happily retrieving three ducks for some very lucky ticket holders. Park Pals, a volunteer group raising funds to build an off leash dog park in South Dundas, organized the 2010 Duck Race.

IROQUOIS – Paul Robertson, who has declared his intentions to seek election for the first time as councillor of South Dundas, recently met with local media at his Saver Road home.

Robertson first came to South Dundas about 20 years ago as a member of the Ontario Provincial Police force. He moved here and has since retired from his 30 year career with the O.P.P.

Originally from a small hamlet between Gananoque and Kingston, Robertson decided to stay here in South Dundas after his retirement rather than moving closer to his roots or his children.

MORRISBURG – Ever been to one of those ‘unusual’ weddings?

You know, one where the entire bridal party has appeared dressed like extras in Gone With the Wind?   Or the groom’s family and the bride’s family began throwing drinks at each other in mid reception? Or the bride (or the groom, depending) ran off with the best man between the salad and the entree?

Well, compared to the Westerby nuptials, now on stage at Upper Canada Playhouse in the new production, There Goes the Bride, those weddings are tame.

SOUTH DUNDAS – It’s almost back to school time, so the Dundas County Food Bank and House of Lazarus in Mountain have teamed up to ensure that children have what they need to head back to class.

For the next couple of weeks, some local businesses and churches will be collecting donations of school supplies on behalf of the two charity organizations.

“The purpose of this initiative is to help with the expense of children going back to school,” said Donna Quesnel, Dundas County Food Bank administrator.

WILLIAMSBURG – Most South Dundas  people know William E. Kursch, the author of Ketchup Bottles for the Dying Church: Nine One Act Plays for the Renewal of the Church, by his everyday name: Rev. Bill Kurschinski, Lutheran pastor.

Although he is ‘officially’ retired,   Kurschinski has never been one to sit on the sidelines. He is far too involved in his community and in his faith to sit passively by while events unfold around him.

MORRISBURG – Fantastic!

The 2010 Tubie Weekend,  held under perfect weather conditions, drew large crowds to the Morrisburg waterfront July 31 for a gala parade and August 1 for the actual Tubie Race.

This year’s much anticipated Tubie races were very fast, and hard fought, with a new river record being set by the winning Robert Farlinger Tubie team. The Farlinger team brought their craft ashore at the Morrisburg beach in a time of 5:58,  actually beating their winning time of 6:10 set in 2009.

With this win, Farlinger’s will now have their name engraved on the Danny Cassell Memorial Trophy, presented to the winning team, more than any other. This is their eighth Tubie race win.

SOUTH DUNDAS – Just over a month until the nomination deadline for the 2010 municipal election, it looks like more than just the mayor’s position will be contested here in South Dundas.

Thursday, July 29 at 9:25 a.m. Paul D. Robertson filed his nomination papers to seek election as councillor. With this nomination, only the deputy mayor’s position is so far uncontested. James P. Locke is the only candidate who has filed nomination papers for that position.

WILLIAMSBURG – A sub-committee of the Iroquois and District Business Group is planning a celebration at the Iroquois Plaza September 18.

Candace Menges, a member of that sub-committee and the president of the Iroquois and District Business Group (IDBG) attended the last South Dundas council meeting to request $2,000 funding to support their efforts.

South Dundas deputy mayor Steven Byvelds asked if the IDBG would be committing any funds to the celebration?
