MORRISBURG–The long weekend is now behind us, and its time to look forward to skating and hockey...yes, the ice is going in.

South Dundas Manager of Parks and Recreation Donnie Lewis  told The Leader in a recent interview that he was turning the ice plant on Monday, August 30 with the expectation of having ice ready for Monday, September 13..

The last couple of weeks in August saw the replacement of the “chiller” (the equipment that pumps the brine into and out of the 240 one inch lines that run under the arena floor) at a cost of $58,350 plus HST.

MORRISBURG–With three down and four to go, Morrisburg Junior B Lions coach Marc Bissonnette says he likes what he has seen so far.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions, with 45 kids in camp, have now played three exhibition games with some not bad results says Bissonnette who is joined on the Lions’ bench this season by returning assistant coach Thom Racine and Cody Casselman (a former Lions’ defenceman).

MORRISBURG–Upper Canada Playhouse, Artistic Director Donnie Bowes, says “I never laugh out loud”, but during rehearsals for Neil Simon’s Odd Couple: Female Version, Bowes’ laughter has been heard a number of times.

“I just think it is a very funny play,” says Bowes of his infrequent laugh out loud response.

Kate Veinotte, who plays the meticulous and neurotic Florence, agrees. “I think this version is much funnier than the first one (Odd Couple male version).”

MORRISBURG–The Blue Balls left no uncertainty as to who was heading for the 2010 Dundas Men’s Roller Hockey League championship here last Thursday, August 26.

The Balls, who finished in second spot in the regular season standings, posted a 4-2 first period lead against Black Attack and then breezed to a definitive 10-3 lead in the second period.

MORRISBURG–An upset was definitely in the making as the four teams in the Dundas Men’s Roller Hockey League squared off for the first round of playoffs last Thursday, August 19.

From their basement position, with just two wins during the regular season, the Black Attack reached way up to nab first place White Lightning for a 13-6 victory and the right to advance to the League’s A championship final this Thursday night.

MORRISBURG – Who knows when the first youngster grabbed a rope, hurled it over a tree branch and attached it to a tire...then stepped back, a gleam in his/her eye, and called it a swing.

For centuries children have enjoyed playing on swings, and here in South Dundas, the tradition continues. However, due to today’s safety standards it is getting to the point where, if you want to swing, you may have to get in line.

MORRISBURG – White Lightning gave it just enough to wrap up the 2010 regular season Dundas Men’s Roller Hockey League Championship last Thursday when they battled back in the last minute of play against Orange Crush to collect a single point on a 10-10 tie.

With just one game remaining in the regular season, the Lightning holds onto first place with 15 points, while the Blue Balls (who defeated Black Attack 13-10 Thursday night) are in second spot three points back at 12. Orange Crush are third with 11 and Black Attack has four.

CANTON, NY–Who says play on the home course doesn’t offer up an advantage?

Sunday, the annual Men’s Border League Golf Competition was played at the St. Lawrence Course and it was the local Canton team that scored the win, going from last year’s last place finish, when the tournament was hosted by Morrisburg, to this year’s win.

The 10-man St. Lawrence team (eight players, a senior and a junior) posted a 703 nine-man total (the high score is not used) to narrowly edge out Prescott with a 707 stroke total.

MORRISBURG–The Morrisburg Minor Mariners finished their regular season last week with a pair of victories to earn a spot in the A pool of the championship tournament coming up this weekend in Morrisburg.

The Mariners kicked it off with a lopsided 9-3 win against Prescott, Thursday night, and then brought it home Friday to finish their year with an exciting 6-5 victory over Williamsburg.

Thursday night in Prescott, Jaxon Weegar scored the lone Mariner run to hold the score at 1-1 at the end of the first inning.

MORRISBURG–The ladies broke their string of rain nights for their weekly ladies night last Wednesday and although the black clouds threatened the rain held off and play was completed.

Leading this week’s field, sponsored by Giant Tiger, was Diane Gallinger with a 43 for the low gross in A flight. Linda Barclay won B flight with a 45, Carol Dawley C with a 49 and Wendy Hoogeveen D with a 50.

MORRISBURG–Upper Canada Village will see military action, August 7-8 when 75 re-enactors converge to show how Canadians participated in the U.S. Civil War from 1861 to 1865.

Infantry, artillery, cavalry and civilian personnel will set up camp in the fields behind Loucks farm and perform marching drills, musket firing demonstrations and skirmishes.
