IROQUOIS–Still just two months into his rookie season in a 358 Modified, Luke Whitteker continued to impress this past weekend as he notched a pair of top five finishes to his season totals.

Friday night, the team traveled to Autodrome Edelweiss, near Gatineau, Quebec, in the small town of Cantley where he finished fifth in the 30 lap main event, to now sit in fourth place in overall track points, only 14 points behind the leader.

MORRISBURG–Black Attack were the ones who found themselves under attack in Dundas Men’s Roller Hockey League action at the arena here last Thursday, June 3.

Although the Black Attack shooters were able to put eight goals past Blue Balls goaltender Jason Chambers, it fell well short of the mark as the Balls went to work to carve out a crushing 17-6 victory. 

Steve Mattice and Dean Moore led the Blue Balls with four goals each while Jon Chambers and Aron Sherrer each counted three.

MORRISBURG –Club Captain, Andy Patenaude has released the list of players who qualified for the various Morrisburg Golf Club teams at the two qualifying rounds played May 29-30.

Cutting spots on the 2010 Border League team (non-handicapped event) are Lance LePage, Mike Deschamps, Brian McNairn, Lindsay Weegar, Kirk Barkley, Larry Gallinger, Ray Baker, Charlie Moore, senior Len Arskey and junior Brandon St. Louis.

This year’s Border League will be hosted by St. Lawrence Golf Club at Canton, New York on Sunday, August 8.

CANTLEY, QUEBEC–The great start to the 2010 racing season continued for Luke Whitteker, as he traveled to Edelweiss Speedway on Friday night, May 28, to earn a solid fourth place finish, and match his starting position.  Whitteker had a place finish at Edelweiss a week earlier, adding to his win in a 50-lap event on opening night.

MORRISBURG–For three days in June, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission will again offer visitors a second gateway into the past, to a much earlier time and place when chivalry and revelry were at their best.  

From June 11-13, Eastern Ontario will play host to its third annual Medieval Festival, the largest event of its kind in Ontario, all set in a re-created encampment area behind Upper Canada Village.

MORRISBURG–The Morrisburg Minor Marriners added another stroke in their win column last Wednesday, June 2 when they defeated South Mountain on their home diamond, 18-5. 

The Marriners caused the big damage in the bottom of the first inning when they went up 6-0. In fact they collected six runs in each of the three innings played to tally the win.

MORRISBURG – The Morrisburg Minor Marriners (ages 8-10 years) are off to a good start in Upper Canada Little League ball as they currently sit atop an undefeated three-game record.

The Marriners kicked it off on Wednesday, May 19 at home with a 13-1 win against Williamsburg.

Their second game against Prescott the following night was rained out (they were leading 4-0).

They travelled to Chesterville last Tuesday, May 25 for a 9-7 win and added the third consecutive victory at home on Wednesday, May 26 with a 14-9 win against Winchester.

WILLIAMSBURG–Following a decision to take a break from Music Festivals last year, 16-year-old Kate Gervais returned with a vengeance this season.

Gervais, a student of Williamsburg teachers Alicia Desjardins and John Hutchinson, picked up awards and honours in both Ottawa and Cornwall.

She and fellow students Nicole Giles, Sarah Netherwood and Alyson Summers, all successfully auditioned for master classes at the National Arts Centre (Ottawa) in March with Juno award nominated composer, Dr. Stephen Chatman.

MORRISBURG – The Amazing Grannies of Morrisburg are organizing a Walk for the Stephen Lewis Foundation which will take place Sunday, June 13, 1 pm. starting at the Cruickshank Amphitheater. After an official send -off by local dignitaries and music provided by Mario Pronovost and Claude Plamondon who will be singing a song they composed and recorded about African Grannies, we will proceed along Lakeshore Drive until we have met our own limitations! Jean Ward and the Morrisburg Drummers will accompany us as we stroll or jog!

MORRISBURG – As last week was a holiday, there is a great deal of news from the branch. The general meeting and election of officers took place on May 19. It was nice to see so many interested in the welfare of Branch #48 and its future. Zone commander Sharon Murray presided over the elections assisted by two officers of the Iroquois branch. For a two year term, M. Praine was elected president, 1st vice is D. Dillabaugh, 2nd vice is M. Hubert, 3rd vice (appointed) is G. Foss, secretary is E. Guindon, treasurer is D. Froats. Six executive members were elected: G. Houze,  R. Houze, K.

MORRISBURG – This week, three townships and the United Counties will continue their training to manage response effort for major emergencies.

North Dundas, South Stormont, and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry held their annual training and exercises together at the Winchester Arena on Tuesday, June 1st.

The two townships tested one of their high risk emergency supporting plans, and the Counties tested their process of supporting townships during emergency situations.

IROQUOIS – “We’ve got nearly 600 kids signed up in 46 countries to play this year, our 15th year, and nearly 75 volunteers out to work with them,” said Jennifer Perry an organizer with this year’s South Dundas Soccer League. In anniversary shirts designed by Serena VanDodewaard, a grade 11 student at Seaway District High school,  the first games of the season kicked off on Saturday, May 22. Youngsters range from four year old Little Squirts to Seniors ages 17-18.

SOUTH DUNDAS–The Dundas County Men’s Roller Hockey League rolled into their new season last Thursday showing some awesome offense.

Kicking it off was White Lightning with apowerful 18-12 victory over Black Attack and the Blue Balls followed that up with an 11-7 win against Orange Crush.

White Lightning flew out of the starter’s gate going up 6-2 against Black Attack in the first period of play. By the end of two they were up 12-7.

BROCKVILLE–The Upper Canada District School Board has become the only board in Canada to earn a prestigious award for the quality of its health and wellness programs.

Board staff recently learned the UCDSB had earned the National Quality Institute’s (NQI) Level 2 Healthy Workplace ® Award, said Linda Billing, UCDSB manager of strategic-human resources.

KITCHENER/CAMBRIGE–On the weekend of May 1-2, the Upper Canada Ice Major Midget girls’ basketball team returned from the provincial championships with a bronze medal, the first provincial medal for the association based in Ingleside.

CORNWALL–One hundred students with the Upper Canada District School Board got a taste of the college life last Wednesday during the 2010 Connections day in Cornwall.

The event, held at the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College, was designed to familiarize grades 7 and 8 students with the campus and its programs. The students enjoyed information sessions on a variety of programs including the police foundations, game development, nursing, automotive technician and early childhood education programs.
