For most at Seaway District High School, June 25 marks a fabulous date - the last day of exams. Once tests are handed in, pencils, book-bags and thoughts of school will drift away, and summer will officially begin.

However, for most grade 12 students, June 25 comes with a bittersweet feeling. For the last time these seniors will walk the halls of Seaway, as students at least.

“It’s weird that after all these years of being surrounded by these helpful teachers and classmates, we’re all going our separate ways now, but I wish everyone the best,” said Olivia Wright.

On Friday, June 4, senior students in grades 11 and 12 at Seaway District High School were privileged to be able to view a thought provoking presentation by constable Mark Evans of the O.P.P.

“I’m not here to lecture you,” was one of Evans’ first comments. “What I am here for is to keep you safe and aware.”

IROQUOIS – Seaway District High School’s photography class is a relatively new option for students, having only been placed on the time table a few years ago. However, it has quickly become a popular option for Seaway Spartans, seeming to grow in popularity with each progressive year.

Why are students so attracted to the class? The reason can probably be narrowed down to the fact that photography really is a diverse subject; there is a large variety of components to the class.

As June approaches, Seaway Spartans are finding themselves busier than ever as the school year gears up for a great finish of the 2009-10 school year.

Currently the Global Outreach Team is campaigning for their annual Our Kenyan Kids project. The team has assigned each MSIP class with one young Kenyan child, and the MSIP’s task is to raise enough money to “adopt a cot” so that the child will have a place to sleep in the orphanage where he or she lives. Many MSIPs have jumped right into their fund raising: hosting bake sales, selling ice cream...even having a 50/50 draw.

IROQUOIS – As the summer months continue to draw ever nearer, Seaway Spartans are beginning the scramble to gain summer employment. However, many seem to be encountering the same problem: the jobs they are looking for just aren’t out there. In fact, jobs in general just aren’t out there, and students are beginning to feel desperate.

“It’s very stressful whenever you’ve put your resumé out there and no one is getting back to you,” said one senior student. “Especially when all of your friends are getting calls and you are still jobless.”

May 3, 2010, marked an important day for college-bound students at Seaway District High School. It was the final deadline for students to respond to acceptance offers from colleges. The fast approaching date of May 28 marks the same deadline for students planning on heading off to university in the fall. Soon enough, tuition and residence deposits will have to be made, combining big decisions with big money.

IROQUOIS – The evening of Thursday, April 22, was one of glamour for SDHS as Students Council hosted the 5th annual Oskar ceremony and dance. This year, there was additional finery as the event was dubbed a masquerade ball. Students showed up in an array of sparkles, feathers and masks.

Spring fever has hit Seaway Spartans left, right and centre. With the bright sun warming spirits and the green grass and budding trees, it is not hard to be in a cheerful mood - although it is hard to focus on school work. It is now reasonable to claim that the “end is near” especially with midterm report cards due for distribution on April 21, marking the half way point of the semester.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 20:00

IROQUOIS – Scholarship deadlines. Confirmations dates. Tuition payments. For grade 12 students everywhere, the upcoming end of the school year brings with it enough important dates to make a day planner seem necessary and things are no different for senior Spartans.

IROQUOIS – The March Break marked approximately one year until an eager group of adventurous Spartans, along with teacher Mme Iwachniuk, will jet off on a European holiday with the travelling company, EF Tours.

This will be the third time that Iwachniuk has take a group of students overseas, the last trip having taken place two years ago. Asked why she organizes these trips for the students, Iwachnuik has a ready answer.

IROQUOIS – Bench, Abercrombie and Fitch. Puma. DC. Lululemon. All around the halls of Seaways one can see such name brands splashed across the clothing of the students. With prices settling somewhere above $90 for selected sweaters and even more for jeans/pants, however, one must wonder whether wearing labels comes at too high a cost.

“I think that they’ve gone too far,” said senior student Olivia Wright on the topic of band name labels. “They’ve just become an excuse to judge each other, to distinguish between ‘rich’ and ‘cheap.’ They support the whole ‘popularity hierarchy’.”

Thursday, February  4, saw the commencement of the second semester at Seaway. With the new term came some new teaching staff, some new students and a new form of learning for some senior students - online courses.

Although online courses have been available at Seaway for a few years, more students than ever are taking advantage of this alternative method of earning a credit. For some, it is because they are able to take a class in which they are interested that is not available at Seaway, but for others, it is because they have no choice.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 - 19:00

It’s a busy time of year at Seaway District High School. Not only exams are preoccupying the time of the Spartans, there are numerous other things going on as the second semester draws even nearer.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 - 19:00

IROQUOIS –  Now that the new year at school has begun and the holidays feel like ancient history, Seaway Spartans have no choice but to face the facts: first semester is almost over and final exams are creeping closer and closer.

Students will begin writing on January 27th, and will be finished up by January 29th. The school has adopted a new system this year that does not require students to show up for classes in which they have done some form of culminating activity in place of an exam, as was done in previous years. Therefore, pupils enrolled in courses such as Physical Education or Technology are more likely to participate in a hands-on final activity during the last few weeks of the semester rather than write a formal exam.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 - 19:00

IROQUOIS –  Anything can happen in 2010. And with that in mind, Seaway’s student council is back to work, making plans for the New Year.

IROQUOIS – Ask a senior student what they think of spare, and you will likely get a response somewhere between “Cool!” and “Totally awesome!” Be it during periods one, two, three or four, any spare that a grade 12 has is cherished.

The lucky senior students who were able to fit a spare into their schedule find the bonus hour extremely useful.

“I remember how I was always looking forward to grade 12 because then I could have a spare.
