MORRISBURG–The Canadian Club is preparing to kick off another season this September 15, when guest speaker, Lyle Van Allen will bring back memories of the St. Lawrence Seaway through his collection of memorabilia.

IROQUOIS–If you notice an influx of Classic Cars through Iroquois on Sunday, September 12, don’t be alarmed!  The Highway 43 Car Club is coming to town, hosting their inaugural “Rumble at the Locks” Car Show.

The show, which takes place at the Iroquois Locks, will be on from 9 a.m. – 3. p.m., with all the cars and trucks perched up on the lookout area.  The club is hoping to attract cars from all over Eastern Ontario and the Northern United States.

Highlights will include a polo match demonstration (Friday only) by the Augusta Polo Club, and “Dancing with the Equine Stars” by Drogheda Manor from Lunenburg, Ontario.

MORRISBURG – Saturday, September 11, Dr. Devin Hunt of the Morrisburg Animal Hospital will cycle 50 km to raise funds and awareness for the Farley Foundation—a charitable organization that assists low-income seniors, disabled persons and women at risk of abuse* with the necessary veterinary care of their pets.

IROQUOIS – The highly acclaimed novelist, Maggie Wheeler, will be appearing at the Carman House Museum, Iroquois, on Saturday, August 21, from 1-3 p.m.

Wheeler is currently launching the fourth, and final novel in her Farran Mackenzie mystery series, On A Darkling Plain.

She will be in Iroquois Saturday afternoon to sign personal copies of her novel.

MORRISBURG – The new miniature train and phase one of the newly laid track at Upper Canada Village will be officially named and opened for rides this Friday, August 13 and in celebration of the opening, train rides, parking and admission to the Village will be free to all guests starting at 1:30 p.m.

The first element of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission’s $13 million Discovery Centre project, the train and new track will be officially launched by Tourism & Culture Minister Michael Chan at 2:30 p.m. this Friday.

MORRISBURG–The St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) has announced the awarding of the contract for general contractor for the construction of the Upper Canada Discovery Centre to the Cornwall firm of Robert J. Bourgon & Associates Ltd.

The construction contract, valued at $3.1 Million was awarded through an open and competitive purchasing process, conducted by MHPM Project Management, who is overseeing the overall project.

WINCHESTER – True Love in Christ Ministries, a grass root Christ centered local ministry is celebrating their fifth anniversary with a dose of good laughter for the heart.

To make this celebration special they have added to their Annual Dinner/Auction the Big Time Idol Comedy Interactive Variety Show performed by The Big Time Productions Co. The event will be held Saturday September 11th at the Winchester Community Center (upstairs hall).

This new UCV Culinary and Gardens Festival runs from Friday, July 23 to Sunday July 25 and includes garden tours, special presentations, taste testing and sampling locally produced foods, and modern and 1860s cooking demonstrations.

By promoting food and gardening traditions, visitors will experience the deep connections between plants and people.

IROQUOIS – A family of ospreys has welcomed the arrival of a new member to their family, while comfortably settled in their new  home  high atop a perch provided by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation  (SLSMC).

The osprey nest, originally built on top of a Seaway crane  adjoining the lock, was moved by experts on Friday May 21st to a new location just a few metres away.

MORRISBURG–Morrisburg Public School has been selected as one of three more SD&G elementary schools that will open their doors for the first time to full-day kindergarten in September 2011.

The selection of 2011 full-day kindergarten schools is the next step toward the full implementation of the program by 2015-16.

The other two local schools that will begin offering the program in 2011 are École Sainte-Therese and Viscount Alexander Public School. In total, eight local schools will offer the program in 2011.

MORRISBURG – The all new Upper Canada Heritage Festival set to run July 1- 4 will allow visitors the chance to experience real 19th century entertainment, social engagements and amusements never before showcased at Upper Canada Village.

The highlight of the Festival will be a twice-daily, daring spectacle of acrobats on horseback, dressage, a contortionist, a juggler and more, all part of a musical circus equestrian show by Luna Caballera from Quebec–the 19th century was the golden age for this type of showmanship!

MORRISBURG – The third annual Medieval Festival held on grounds behind Upper Canada Village continued to draw crowds and thrill visitors over the weekend with almost 10,000 visitors over the three-day event.

 

A revamped King’s Banquet, more games and activities plus camel and joust horse rides for visitors were some of the highlights.

BERWICK – A Nationview Public School student has become the face of Roger’s House as a member of Roger’s Dream Team.

Stephanie Fawcett, a 15-year-old special skills student at Nationview, has joined the 10-person team to help spearhead fundraising efforts for the Scotiabank Walk, Roll and Run June 20 for Roger’s House.

The campaign is a major fundraiser for the respite centre which provides a place to stay for children under the care of medical staff at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

MORRISBURG–One of the newest enhancements to Upper Canada Village’s upcoming third Annual Medieval Festival is an all-new King’s Banquet that is expected to draw up to 250 guests this year.

While the Festival itself, running Friday. June 11 to Sunday, June 13, will take place on grounds adjacent to Upper Canada Village, the Saturday Evening King’s Banquet on Saturday, June 12, has moved to a larger facility, and will take place in the spacious OPG Community Pavillion located on the beautiful grounds of nearby Crysler Park Marina overlooking the St. Lawrence River.
