IROQUOIS – In March of 2010, Doug Millard of Iroquois set himself a goal of running 450 kilometres, the distance from Cornwall to Toronto, via a ‘virtual run.’ His aim was to help raise $100,000 to build a new school in the African nation of Ethiopia.

WILLIAMSBURG –  The issues are serious and troubling ones for many Christians: dying churches desperately seeking renewal and hopeful visioning as their numbers decline.

A dynamic new book of plays, written by William E. Kursch, entitled Ketchup Bottles for the Dying Church, doesn’t flinch at directly addressing these controversial matters. However, Kursch’s book does so with humour and common sense.

IROQUOIS – Ten years ago, she wrote A Violent End, the first in a series of mysteries tied to the St. Lawrence Seaway project featuring amateur sleuth  Farran Mackenzie.

The Brother of Sleep and All Mortall Things followed.

Several local fans took the opportunity, Saturday, August 21, to meet author Maggie Wheeler at a book signing for her latest mystery, On A Darkling Plain, which was held at the historic Carman House in Iroquois.

IROQUOIS – Under nearly  ideal golfing skies, 52 players took part in the 2010 Iroquois Men’s Open on Saturday, August 14. Play began at 10 a.m. and ended at 6 p.m. with awards presentations and a dinner at the Iroquois club house.

Taking top honours in the  2010 Tournament were Kurtis Barkley and Jamie Hartle, “A” flight leaders.  Barkley shot a 69 for the low gross while Hartle shot 63 for the low net.

In addition, Barkley was also closest to the pin on #7 (22.5 inches) and on #18 (89.5 inches).

IROQUOIS – Rain  might have poured down on the last three holes at the 2010 Ladies Valley League Tournament held at the Iroquois Golf Club on Sunday, August 15, but it didn’t stop the players from finishing the course.

MORRISBURG – The humans gathered at the Morrisburg beach might have been a little nervous on Sunday, August 1, but the four-footed stars of the first ever Park Pals Duck Race definitely weren’t.

Abby, Bumper and Coco leaped into the water like old pros, happily retrieving three ducks for some very lucky ticket holders. Park Pals, a volunteer group raising funds to build an off leash dog park in South Dundas, organized the 2010 Duck Race.

MORRISBURG – Ever been to one of those ‘unusual’ weddings?

You know, one where the entire bridal party has appeared dressed like extras in Gone With the Wind?   Or the groom’s family and the bride’s family began throwing drinks at each other in mid reception? Or the bride (or the groom, depending) ran off with the best man between the salad and the entree?

Well, compared to the Westerby nuptials, now on stage at Upper Canada Playhouse in the new production, There Goes the Bride, those weddings are tame.

WILLIAMSBURG – Most South Dundas  people know William E. Kursch, the author of Ketchup Bottles for the Dying Church: Nine One Act Plays for the Renewal of the Church, by his everyday name: Rev. Bill Kurschinski, Lutheran pastor.

Although he is ‘officially’ retired,   Kurschinski has never been one to sit on the sidelines. He is far too involved in his community and in his faith to sit passively by while events unfold around him.

MORRISBURG – Fantastic!

The 2010 Tubie Weekend,  held under perfect weather conditions, drew large crowds to the Morrisburg waterfront July 31 for a gala parade and August 1 for the actual Tubie Race.

This year’s much anticipated Tubie races were very fast, and hard fought, with a new river record being set by the winning Robert Farlinger Tubie team. The Farlinger team brought their craft ashore at the Morrisburg beach in a time of 5:58,  actually beating their winning time of 6:10 set in 2009.

With this win, Farlinger’s will now have their name engraved on the Danny Cassell Memorial Trophy, presented to the winning team, more than any other. This is their eighth Tubie race win.

IROQUOIS – “I was afraid it was going to flip over,” said Irma Jackson who watched the 1967  four-seater Piper Cherokee 180, piloted by Robert Lams, his wife Francine on board,  as it overshot the runway at Iroquois Airport at 11:22 a.m., Sunday, July 25.

“You hate to see something like this happen,” said Jackson, who lives near the end of the runway, “but it could have been worse.”

Robert Lams, who has been a private pilot for 30 years, and has owned the Cherokee for 20 years, left Rockcliffe Airport to travel to Iroquois with four other planes early on Sunday morning.

MORRISBURG – The 2010 celebration of Antiquefest drew over 1,500 locals and out of town visitors to the Morrisburg waterfront  during the opening weekend of Old Home Week.

“On the whole we were very pleased with this year’s Antiquefest,” said convenor Lion Mike Domanko, July 25. “It’s always great to have local people come out to support us, but this year we also saw a lot of tourists. I like to think that Old Home Week is part of the draw. We really want to bring people to this area, and all these events, including Antiquefest are great for our region.”

IROQUOIS – “We were a little nervous three days ago. The airport grounds were like a lake,” said John Ross, Iroquois Air Port manager, “but a strong wind cleared things up and no thunderstorms rolled in. It was great flying weather, as was obvious by the huge turn-out on Sunday.”

Fairy tales can come true?

Wednesday, July 14, 2010 - 00:00

MORRISBURG - The controversy begins on June 6, 1944.

As exploding underwater mines and incoming artillery shells pummeled the ‘second wave’ at Juno Beach near Bernieres-sur-Mer, a Lt. Gilbert A. Milne, Royal Canadian Navy, leaned over the side of the landing craft he was riding in, and took a single  black and white photograph.

He shot  a sister landing craft, designated LC 299, steaming to the Normandy beach.

MORRISBURG – “Why do you suppose they’re late?” Wynne Trueman (Susan Greenfield) anxiously asks her husband Max (Jamie Williams) as they wait for old friends Roger and Abby Nash to arrive for the weekend.

“Maybe he’s caught in one of those leg hold traps I set for him,” Max replies, hopefully.

And that pretty much sets the tone of Norm Foster’s hilarious look at relationships when two ill assorted couples spend a weekend learning all about each other...to their horror.

IROQUOIS – Doug Millard is a man on the run. Literally.

The Iroquois native describes his efforts as “Cornwall to Toronto in 100 days.” He is making a ‘virtual run’ that will carry him the 450 kilometres that lie between Cornwall in eastern Ontario, and Toronto in central Ontario to raise money for schools in Ethiopia.

Millard is making his run on behalf of the charity, Imagine One Day, (or Imagine1day or i1d) whose goal is to provide sustainable educational facilities in the African nation of Ethiopia.
