IROQUOIS – The Dixon’s Corners Community Centre, developed by brothers Peter and Arie Van Dodewaard, is holding its first open house on Saturday, June 26 at 2 p.m. to show South Dundas families, organizations and businesses the potential of the new facility.

However, the transformation of unused classrooms into family and teen facilities is due, in no small measure, to the work of a group of Life Skills students from Seaway District High School under the direction of teacher Eileen Johnston.

DIXON’S CORNERS – “We want to make this building a community centre, renting out affordable space to fitness and other community groups,” said Marja Smellink, a member of the board of the new Dixon’s Corners Community Centre, located in the former school.

“Purchasing this old school and transforming it was a joint venture between my brothers. They love kids, and they want to create a space for them to use.”

MORRISBURG –  “We will not rest until they rest,” said Robin Lane one of the organizers of the June 13 Morrisburg Amazing Grannies Walk. “This walk is a national event, with 230 groups across Canada out to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We are so happy that many ‘grand-others’ have joined us to walk today.”

IROQUOIS – Erin Gilmer, a grade seven student at Seaway District Intermediate School, could be forgiven for being unable to sit still during her interview. She was still glowing from what she described as “the best experience of my life.”

In April, Erin won the right to represent the United Counties Science Fair at the 49th Canada-Wide Science Fair which took place in Peterborough the week of  May 15-23. Her winning exhibit on the nature and spread of disease, was entitled How Clean is Your School?

IROQUOIS – The students and teachers at Seaway District High School and Seaway Intermediate School are making a difference in the lives of children half way around the world, one cot at a time.

For the last four weeks, the MSIP classes at the high school and the grades 7-8 students have been fund raising to support a group of Kenyan orphans. The secondary students have “adopted” six babies while the intermediate students have “adopted” one baby as part of the OKKids (Our Kenyan Kids) campaign run in the school by the Global Outreach Group.

IROQUOIS – March 10, 2010, Seaway District High School and Seaway Intermediate School were awarded grants of $24,000 through Breakfast Clubs of Canada, while Iroquois Public School was granted $8,000 for its breakfast program.

On June 2, Seaway welcomed Devorah Belinsky, nutrition coordinator for Healthy Eating for Better Learning, and Caroline Douville, program coordinator, Eastern Ontario, Breakfast Clubs of Canada, to Seaway, as part of their tour of local schools awarded grants.

MORRISBURG – “This was our first year  running a Jumpstart Day in Morrisburg,” said Ninon Proulx, in administration at the Morrisburg Canadian Tire store, “and we are very pleased with the support we received from the community. It was really great.”

The efforts of the local Canadian Tire,  which is owned by Michel Proulx, and the members of his staff, as well as a team of enthusiastic volunteers, allowed the store to contribute $3,397.54 to the Canadian Tire nationwide Jumpstart Day, May 29.

MORRISBURG – From toys to books, from antiques and furniture to collectibles, from flowers, baking, and jewellery to clothing and comics: in short, you might find anything and everything at McHaffie’s Flea Market, which celebrated its 30th year in business on Sunday, May 30, 2010.

Founded in 1980 by Wayne and Sheila McHaffie and Neil and the late Debra Strader, McHaffie’s Flea Market is a landmark in Glen Becker, just outside Morrisburg. For three decades it has been drawing between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors every Sunday, with even more dropping in on long weekends and holidays.

MORRISBURG – Prompt action by the Morrisburg Fire Department Friday evening, May 21, prevented a fire,  which began in the attached garage, from spreading to the main house.

The property, on the corner of First and High Streets, belongs to Mark McClinton.

Residents of the house, Tabitha Major and Jenna Crump, were not at home when neighbours spotted the flames and called the MFD.

Chief Robert Hamilton said that the pumper truck, rescue and equipment trucks responded to the call.

Major and Crump arrived about 20 minutes later.

Love South Dundas volunteers were just leaving on a prayer walk around Morrisburg on Friday, May 21. A blessing of South Dundas communities is just one of the many activities planned by the campaign which runs until June 6, when all community members, young and old, are invited to attend a barbecue and presentation by former CFL star, Tracy Ham, at the Morrisburg Arena.

MORRISBURG – The weather co-operated, the sales were enormous, and even window shoppers found lots to attract their interest as Morrisburg held its annual giant yard sale Saturday, May 22.

“We’ve has steady visitors,” said Marni Marriott, who was manning the door at Allan Hall. “I’ve been busy right from 7 a.m. this morning,” said Monia Desaulniers, one of the people offering ‘new-to-you’ treasures in her yard. “People really seem to be buying.”

WINCHESTER – May 15, was a night of glamour and glitter as Winchester Arena was transformed into the deck of a luxury cruise ship. A sold out hospital gala crowd of 550 was on hand to help raise funds for the next phase, Just down the road, of Winchester District Memorial Hospital’s current $5 million campaign.

“Tonight we have achieved a major milestone,” Grenkie told the gala audience. “We have now reached $2.25 million dollars in our campaign.”

The Love South Dundas campaign for 2010 has started.

This is the second annual campaign organized by area churches and spearheaded by Pastors Duncan Perry and Clarence Witten.

MORRISBURG – The AIDS pandemic has already destroyed generations of families in many African countries. On the heels of this terrible disease has come abject poverty for many survivors.

Over 13 million African children are now orphaned. The only family left to care for them is often elderly ‘grandmothers’, whose courage in taking up the challenge is both recognized and honoured by other grandmothers here in South Dundas and across Canada.
