Atom B 2s win Pembroke tournament
MORRISBURG – The South Dundas Atom B #2 Lions posted a very solid 25 goals and gave up just three in five games to skate away with the championship silverware of a recent tournament in Pembroke.
The powerful Lions polished off the February 7-8 tournament, Sunday February 8, with a lopsided 8-1 victory over the Embrun Panthers who were also undefeated going into the final.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the first period, but they were no match for the Lions, who counted on their strong offensive play and their strong work in the net from Christian Francis.
Francis was a key factor in the Lions’ success throughout the tournament as he recorded three shutouts and gave up only three goals in the five games.
The Lions got it rolling with a 4-0 win against the West Carleton Warriors.
After a scoreless first period, Mitchel Woodward (from Lucas Bennis and Cassie Hummel) put the Lions on the scoreboard in the second period.
Lucas Bennis counted twice for the Lions in the third period, the first with help from Connor Dumoulin and the second with help from Beavers and brother Jonah Bennis. Oakley Beavers, with help from Jonah Bennis, started the second period scoring.
In game two, the Lions registered a 7-2 win against the host team, the Pembroke Lazers.
The 7-2 win was the result of a solid team effort, with strong defence from Ewan Baril and Brooke Lapier, and strong offensive play from Brody Smail and Devin Dumoulin.
The goals were scored by Joshua Perry (Brooke Lapier), Jonah Bennis (Hummel), Oakley Beavers, Tyler Rae (Lucas Bennis) and Devin Dumoulin.
Quarter final action on Sunday morning resulted in a 2-0 Lions win over the Leitrim Hawks which put the Lions in the semi-final against the Pembroke Lazers. The Lions dominated the action against the Lazers for a 4-0 win and the right to advance to the championship final.
