Baking up some great treats at the Blues
MORRISBURG – Family members, friends and local dignitaries were all on hand to welcome new business owners Michael and Trena Grant to the South Dundas community on Tuesday, November 24. The Grants have just opened the Blues Bakery and Cafe, next door to Curves at the far eastern end of the Morrisburg Shopping Plaza.
“I’ve already been in to sample your wares,” said South Dundas mayor Robert “Rowdy” Gillard, as part of his welcome address. “They were great. We’re very glad that you have decided to come to South Dundas.”
Barb Scott, president of the chamber of commerce, added her welcome to the mayor’s, observing that it is “people like you who help to make our community grow.” Bringing greetings from MP Guy Lauzon was his executive assistant, Eric Duncan, while MPP Jim Brownell sent a special scroll to the Grants with his constituency assistant, Jeremy Gowsell.
The Blues Bakery and Cafe got its name courtesy of the Grant’s two children, Addison and Ayden. “We named the business after their big blue eyes,” explained Trena Grant. The bakery offers desserts, sandwiches, cookies and specialty ice cream cakes. The Bakery can cater gatherings both large and small, with delicious platters of baked goods and sandwiches. “Our ice cream cakes are specially created on site,” said Grant, who learned her skills at Dairy Queen, then went on to develop her own unique approach to ice cream cakes. “We will gladly customize them for people, since we want to ensure that receiving one of our cakes is a memorable experience for everyone.”
Trena Grant is the chief baker, while husband Michael serves as general manager. Originally they were owner/operators of the Potato Wagon, a restaurant on wheels, that served special potatoes at local celebrations. They worked at a number of events in South Dundas and really liked both the area and the people. With the arrival of their children, the Grants felt that they needed a more stable and permanent location, and seized the opportunity to own their own business in Morrisburg.
The Blues Bakery and Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
