CORNWALL - After five years of dedicated service, Honorary Colonel of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, Bill Shearing of Morrisburg, is retiring.

To mark the occasion of Col.Shearing’s retirement, and to welcome their new Honorary Colonel and Honorary Lieutenant Colonels, the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders will hold a parade at the Cornwall Armoury at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11, which will be open to the public.

The Minister of National Defence, the Hon. Peter MacKay, has approved the promotion of the current Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, Sean Murray of Ottawa, to the rank of Honorary Colonel.

The Minister has also approved the appointment of Lieutenant-Colonel Bob Brooks of St-Lazare, Quebec, a former Commanding Officer of the Glens, as the new Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel.

The Parade will be officially presided over by His Worship Bob Kilger, Mayor of the City of Cornwall. Representatives of the Federal, Provincial, County and Municipal Governments have been invited to witness the event.

“While saddened to say good-bye to Colonel Shearing after such an active and distinguished period of service with us,” said Lt-Col Roy Clarke, the Glens’ Commanding Officer, “we are very happy and pleased to welcome Colonel Murray as our new Honorary Colonel and our former Commanding Officer Bob Brooks as our new Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel. Our Regiment is in excellent hands.”

Honorary Colonels such as Bill Shearing, and Lieutenant-Colonels, are integral members of the Regimental family. They are both “honorary” and “advisory.” They are vital to fostering esprit de corps within the Regimental family. They often mentor the Commanding Officers and active serving members of the Regiment; help build relationships with other units through the network of honorary colonels; and aid in the maintenance of customs and traditions.

By their very presence and name, they build and develop community support, by providing a public profile – a public face – for the Regiment.

Perhaps one of their most important attributes is simply the amount of time honorary colonels spend with the members of the Regiment, no matter what their rank and position. They are highly-respected members of the Regimental family.

The media and the general public are welcome to attend the Armoury ceremonies on February 11 honouring Col. Shearing’s years of commitment to, and service with, the SD&G Highlanders.
