J. Stewart trust aids six Dundas agencies

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 19:00

WILLIAMSBURG–Dundas County Representative, Adele Eyman handed out the County portion of just over $8,000 in John Stewart Estate Memorial Trust grants to six organizations who deliver assistance to the aged and poor in Dundas County last Thursday.

Again this year, Eyman made the presentations at an informal ceremony held at the J.W. MacIntosh Seniors’ Support Centre in Williamsburg.

The money for the annual grants  represents investment income from the 1991 sale, of the John Stewart Home in Cornwall. The home was opened in 1930, as a facility to provide housing for poor and indigent persons.

Eyman explained that this year due to the economy the fund tanked a bit.

“We had 28 applications, so our choices were to give everyone something or be selective of those who could use the money for a project or a purpose.”

The board chose the latter and as a result 17 grants totalling $8,117, and ranging from $350 to $1,000 were awarded to agencies in the City of Cornwall and the United Counties.

The recipients in Dundas County were: the J.W. MacIntosh Seniors Support Centre in Williamsburg for various programs; the Dundas County Hospice for ongoing programming and  support of their loans cupboard; Morrisburg Home Support Service (Meals on Wheels) for their kitchen upgrade; Dundas County Food Bank for food purchasing; House of Lazarus in Mountain to support their Special Needs Program; People First of Dundas, in Mountain in support of their once per month dance event.

To date over $168,136 in income has been distributed to appropriate agencies through the John Stewart Trust Fund.

Representatives from the United Counties and the City of Cornwall constitute the Advisory Board, with the minister of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Cornwall, sitting as a permanent member to acknowledge the religious heritage of John Stewart.

This year marks the 107th anniversary of Mr. Stewart’s death.

The estate is administered by Scotia Private Client Group.
