Midget House tally exciting finishes for series sweep

MORRISBURG–The South Dundas Midget House Lions scored some big endings to some big games to sweep their Upper Canada Minor Hockey League East Division semi-final playoff series last week against the North Dundas Demons.
They opened the series on the Demons’ home turf with a 4-3 win when Derek Hutt connected for the winning goal with three seconds left on the clock.
Then on Sunday (February 28) they wrapped it up on home ice with a 3-2 victory, this time the winning goal coming from Gareth Cochrane with three minutes left in the game.
In game one, the Demons were first on the scoreboard in the first period, when Mckenzie McMillan beat Lions’ goalie Ryan Gilmer.
Derek Hutt, assisted by Daniel Davidson, replied 30 seconds later, to tie the game 1-1.
The Demons went up by one at the end of the first, with a goal from Joshua Jaquemet assisted by Hayden Moher.
Midway into the second period, Cam Armstrong stretched the Demons’ advantage to 3-1, but once again the Lions closed the gap to one with a goal by Dylan Dejong assisted by Cole Veinotte.
Both teams had great opportunities in the third period, and with 3:22 left on the clock Gareth Cochrane, unassisted, tied the game 3-3. Seconds later he went to work to set the stage for Hutts’ winning goal.
Game two on Sunday, February 28th in Morrisburg was another action packed game that featured the Lions winning on a Cochrane goal with 2:49 left on the clock.
North Dundas’ Greg Lynch got the ball rolling when he scored 42 seconds into the first period, assisted by Craig Christopherson.
The Lions’ Dylan Dejong answered four minutes later to tie it 1-1, with help from Daniel Davidson and Cole Veinotte.
The Demons edged ahead 2-1, but that was all they would put past Lions’ goaltender Kyle Gallinger.
Late in the first period, the Lions evened it 2-2 on a Davidson goal assisted by Dylan Dejong.
The tie last throughout the second period and until late in the third when Cochrane connected for the winner, assisted by Derek Hutt and David Baird.
The South Dundas Midget House Lions now advance to play the Kemptville #1 team in the East Division playoff round three. The series schedule was not available at press time.
