Peewee Bs take Perth in two

MORRISBURG–The South Dundas Peewee B Rep Lions ended their regular season on top of the UCMHL west division with a record of 17-2 -5 and their first place finish gave them a bye into the second playoff round where last week they met Perth.
While Canadians across the country were gathered around television sets cheering team Canada to an Olympic gold medal, the Lions were in Lanark to take on Perth in their own hard fought battle.
Like team Canada, the Lions came out on top with a 3-0 victory to lead the series.
The Lions were playing as if they were playing for gold as they came out roaring to dominate the first period.
Despite multiple scoring chances, the period was scoreless as they were up against a solid Michael Saumur between the Perth pipes.
The Lions controlled the play in the second, and with four minutes remaining, Quinn Bennis (Josh Black) jammed the puck past Saumur for a 1-0 Lions’ lead.
Two minutes later, another scramble in front of the Perth net resulted in a Spencer Heldens (Owen Salmon) goal to give the Lions a 2-0 lead going into the third.
Early in the third, the Lions took control of the puck deep in the Perth zone which resulted in a Andrew Jarvis goal on a deflection.
Zach Frawley kept his team in the game making key saves to earn his eight shut out this season for the 3-0 victory.
The Lions kept Perth’s goaltender Michael Saumur busy as they had 58 shots on net.
Perth came to town, Monday night, March 1, looking for revenge, but the Lions put it together again, this time to produce a 2-1 win for the series win in two straight games.
Perth came out flying leaving the Lions flat footed early in the first, but the Lions’ goaltender Frawley made some big saves to keep the period a scoreless affair.
Early in the second Bennis (Jarvis) opened the scoring when he tapped the puck past Perth goaltender Scotty St. Jean for 1-0 Lions’ lead.
Minutes later Alex Echlin (Noah Greer) evened the game when he poked the puck past an undefended Frawley on the glove side.
Great goaltending at both ends of the ice denied multiple scoring chances by both teams.
With three minutes remaining in the third, a Quinn Bennis pass deflected off Spencer Heldens’ skate to beat St. Jean and give the Lions the 2-1 lead.
With a minute remaining in the game, St. Jean was pulled for an extra Perth attacker which led to an exciting ending to the game, but that was it.
The Lions held on for the 2-1 victory to advance to the third round of playoffs against the winner of the Athens/Brockville series.
